For several years, I had the joy of organizing blanket and clothing distributions to refugees and families in need in Piedras Negras, Mexico. Each year, it became a beautiful reminder of the power of simple acts of kindness.
Thanks to the generous financial gifts from businesses, congregations and individual donors, my team and I were blessed to annually distribute over 100 new, large plush blankets to refugee centers and struggling families on Christmas Eve. Along with that, we also received donations of gently-used blankets, coats, jackets, shoes, and warm clothing to share with those braving the cold. Holiday cookies and snacks were also part of the packages, adding a bit of warmth and joy to the season.
Additionally, through our partnership with the Children’s Hunger Fund, we were able to hand out beautifully wrapped gifts, while our good friends at Faith Community Church in Bayou Vista, Texas, joined with us and brought along more than 50 age-appropriate gift bags for the kids.
Witnessing the smiles on their faces and the comfort these simple items brought made this event the highlight of my Christmas. It’s a humbling reminder that sometimes, all it takes to make someone feel loved and blessed is the warmth of a blanket—and a little holiday cheer.
