Nepal is a vibrant crossroads of South Asia, where cultures, languages, and
traditions converge. With over 120 ethnic groups and nearly as many languages, the country’s diversity is woven into every aspect of life—from the bustling streets of Kathmandu to the serene villages nestled in the Himalayas. This blend of heritage makes Nepal uniquely resilient and adaptable, drawing strength from its cultural mosaic. Serve4Change is inspired by this diversity and is committed to supporting community-led initiatives that honor Nepal’s unique identity while addressing critical needs.
Serve4Change in partnership with those in Nepal, have provided essential support for various initiatives:
“Be the change you want to see in the world”
-Ghandi
In 2023, Serve4Change founder Jeff Harvey immersed himself in the rural community of Narjamandap, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains. He became the first American to stay in the village for an extended period and the first volunteer to be welcomed by the Shree Sita Dharma Basic School, which serves farming families in the area.
Through conversations with the school’s founders, staff, and local leaders, Jeff discovered that many non-government schools outside of major cities like Kathmandu face daunting challenges—challenges that even the poorest schools in the Western hemisphere do not encounter. These include a significant lack of resources such as quality textbooks and teaching aids, school supplies, computers, playground equipment, proper restroom facilities, uniforms, and teacher training.
The hope for improvement lies in either renewed government support or
supplemental assistance from the private sector. Serve4Change has made supporting Shree Sita Dharma Basic School a primary initiative in Nepal, aiming to elevate the educational standards that all children deserve. You can help. Together, we can be the spark that ignites lasting change in this small school with enormous potential.
Hope on a Hill tells the story of a small school, providing free basic education to children from surrounding villages since 2008. This documentary follows Serve4Change Founder Jeff Harvey for six weeks. During his journey, he offered English comprehension, creative art activities, and teaching support to grades 1 through 8. Through building trust with students and staff, he documented daily school life and the vibrant community that surrounds it.
In the face of overwhelming administrative demands, schools often
sacrifice essential activities like teacher training sessions and professional
development conferences. Serve4Change recognizes that regular training
is vital for fostering both personal and professional growth among
educators. Our goal is to create practical and encouraging training modules
that are easily accessible, both live and online, particularly for schools
lacking the resources to provide such opportunities. Our team has already
developed programs tailored for both teaching staff and parents,
addressing key topics such as:
International volunteers bring a unique energy to classrooms, enriching the
learning environment and offering students and teaching staff valuable
cultural perspectives. However, volunteers in basic schools in Kathmandu
are not commonly found. Serve4Change believes that a well-organized
Volunteer Program can significantly enhance English instruction and
overall teaching methodologies in local schools.
We are in the process of developing this Volunteer Program and plan to
begin advertising it to potential volunteers soon. By fostering connections
between international volunteers and local educators, we aim to create a
vibrant, collaborative educational experience that benefits everyone
involved.
With every donation, Serve4Change is able to continue its mission of empowering communities through local, sustainable solutions that address the most pressing needs of education, health, and poverty alleviation.
